The Super Service Challenge is a nationwide movement to transform organizations through service. Driven by the premise that people and teams grow stronger when they join together to serve, the Challenge encourages volunteerism, sharing stories of service and awarding funds to nonprofits. The impact of the Super Service Challenge grows each year.

Online, the Challenge has shared more than 20,000 stories of service, counted more than 2.5 million votes, and made over 300 million media impressions. Whether participants are part of a business, family, team of friends, or ministry, the Super Service Challenge provides a way to facilitate teamwork and engagement that benefits individuals, teams and communities.

Business Situation

Web Application Development

The Super Service Challenge distributes millions of dollars to nonprofit organizations across the country through a national competition of videos of service activities. Teams of volunteers create videos serving their favorite nonprofit in order to generate funding and awareness.  By sharing videos and soliciting votes on the Super Service Challenge platform, the teams have the opportunity to win funds for the nonprofit through a quarterly and annual grand prize competition.

The Challenge sought a way to modernize the look and feel of its web application and use updated technologies to significantly reduce administrative requirements.  An automated process for monthly reporting to the Administrator and Charity was required, along with the ability for an Administrator to query the database for contact information in order to send out monthly and quarterly communications.

Super Service Challenge was also looking to eliminate the ability of nonprofits or users to “game” or “abuse” the program through tightening how videos win funding for nonprofits. To prevent users from running campaigns for so long that interest drops off, or uploading videos at consequential times, and to encourage volunteers to continue serving and sharing, a video expiration date was deemed necessary.

Solution

InfoStrat used the latest Microsoft Cloud technologies to deliver a solution extremely quickly.  Starting from scratch, a new set of Azure resources was setup along with an Azure DevOps CD/CI pipeline that fully automated the Development, Test and Production build environments.

The project was live to a limited audience in 6 weeks and rolled out to the general public a week after that.  The creative expertise of the NT Concepts design team ensured a fully responsive web application that runs and looks great on phones, tablets and all modern browsers.  It also included a set of administrative features to manage users, accounts, system configuration, and video abuse reporting and payment management.

The site is a .Net Core Razor Pages application running in Azure with an Azure SQL backend.  Integrations with SendGrid for sending emails and Mail Chimp for email marketing and campaign management were included.  A video CDN was used to host and stream video to the application which supported all mobile device platforms.

The very latest Microsoft tooling and frameworks were used, including; Visual Studio 2019, Identity Services with OAuth2 for third part authentication, .Net Core Entity Framework and function Apps to automate scheduled services.

The Results

The web application was re-imagined from scratch and designed to run in the cloud to minimize operational costs and maximize ease of enhancements and maintenance going forward.

The new web application is responsive to any size device and facilitates reporting and administration of the service awards by non-technical administrative staff. Intuitive to new and returning participants, the new platform includes:

-    FREEFORM TAGGING to help on social media channels
-    ADVANCED search capabilities
-    EASY Registration through Google and Facebook
-    SHARING enhancements through social media channels
-    FLEXIBLE TIMING allowing volunteers to control the length of a video campaign
