Graduate Management Admission Council Data Management and Analysis

GMAC® is composed of representatives from leading business schools worldwide. It is dedicated to creating access to graduate management and professional education. Infostrat assists by developing online solutions to support students, school users and GMAC staff.

BACKGROUND
In 1953, the organization now called the Graduate Management Admission Council® (GMAC®) began as an association of nine business schools whose goal was to develop a standardized test to help business schools select qualified applicants.

In the first year it was offered, the assessment GMAC® sponsored, now known as the Graduate Management Admission Test®, or GMAT®, was taken just over 2,000 times; in recent years, it has been taken more than 200,000 times annually. Initially used in admissions by 54 schools, the GMAT® is now used by more than 1,500 schools and 1,800 programs.

PROBLEM
GMAC receives thousands of requests from applicants and member schools that require fast and accurate analysis and reporting. Infostrat was engaged to upgrade many of the aging, out of date web-based applications that were being relied upon for this critical information, and to bring applications in-house to run on a consistent environment with standard coding practices.

Infostrat has upgraded GMAC applications to current state of the art solutions based on the Microsoft .NET framework to allow for vastly increased performance and manageability.

Solution at a Glance
Created and upgraded web-based systems for online testing and web-based applications for the analysis and management of data collected

Technologies involved

  • .NET Framework
  • C#
  • Microsoft Content Management Server
  • Microsoft Office
  • SQL Server

SOLUTION
Infostrat started by working with GMAC staff to determine which projects and tasks were most urgent in the conversion and maintenance effort.

Infostrat developed new modules for the GMAC.com and MBA.com websites. These sites utilize Content Management Server, SQL Server, and Commerce Server, and support thousands of users worldwide.

One module concerned gathering feedback from graduate schools to assess the predictive value of the test results. This information was used to generate statistics to improve future testing and admissions activities.

Another module allows business schools to search for potential applicants among students who are trying to choose a business school in order to best match the student with the institution.

Infostrat has provided security consulting to protect critical and confidential data managed by GMAC.

The system uses SQL Server 2000 as the database repository. The web client was built using Microsoft Visual Studio.NET and C# as the primary development language. Web services are used to provide extensive integration with existing and planned server applications and with other organizations as part of the test provider process.

By choosing the Microsoft platform, GMAC can take advantage of rich built-in functionality of application servers such as Commerce Server and Content Management Server along with the rapid development capability of .NET to accommodate the unique business requirements of the organization.
